Understanding Reconstruction
Why is the reconstruction sometimes larger than the cancer?
The visible skin cancer often represents only a portion of the tissue that must be removed. The final surgical defect is known only after the cancer has been completely removed.
Reconstruction may involve a larger surrounding area because nearby tissue is sometimes moved or advanced to restore normal contour, distribute tension, protect function, and place scars thoughtfully.
